Backstory-Workshop Studio
As a working title, LUXBOX is derived from the brand-name of a cube shaped, sheet metal camera developed in France, ca. 1933 ; the original was manufactured in multiples by Lumiere & Cie., with variations continuing through the 1950's
In 1972, during our student years in New Orleans, we were experimenting with pin-hole cameras, and had attempted to replicate the function or assembly of a Luxbox. With no luck on that endeavor, we instead turned to a Super-8, small, hand-held movie camera, wrote our first script and assembled a short film - EYES. view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOumzyF9uLQ In those early years, we were also self-taught musicians. Thankfully, there is no documentation of any early performances; we were clearly not ready for prime-time.
Following studies in Psychology and Engineering, with a move to California and continuing education in lighting science adding to the toolbox, a 40-year, related career in lighting (primarily within architectural and landscape environments) has resulted in actions more structured, technical and business-directed for the founder. An employers, sub-contractors, project managers and designers, the company, dodt-plc, completed over 3000 projects between 1978 and 2003. LUXBOX.com was registered in 1999 to combine the technical and creative endeavors of these field and studio projects.
While the field work continues into third decade of the 21st century, the LUXBOXstudio projects nevertheless exist as an out-of-balance, non-parallel, ongoing, right-brain exercise.
Auto didacticism ? -not exactly
We've been honored to work and collaborate with artists, architects, musicians, filmmakers and other immensely creative and influential friends and colleagues over the decades. This work captures a few creative and art-related projects, travel, writing, webwork, and other amateur film /video musings.
Three, short, serendipitous vignettes were captured using a hand-held mini camera and DV tape. The clips were unscripted and all filming was done using single takes with no site edits. Filmed on location from Zurich to Chur (Switzerland) and Ronchamp (France) in 2006. Music on 'LeCorbu' is from a CD entitled 'TangoSessions2", and was derived from an abandoned disc found in a hotel room in Mendoza, Argentina in 2008. We fully honor and credit the composers, musicians and producers of this fine soundtrack. The CD remains at the inn for use by the next lucky listener. Special thanks to Paul B. and Jim J. and the 'Swiss Caper' team. In honor of and in "Memory of Ray"

An early student film, rather raw and very unfocused, assembled
by a 17 year-old when attempting to figure out how to operate a Super-8 film
camera. The soundtrack was lifted from vinyl albums by Pink Floyd, Elton John, ( it was the early 70's, folks) copied onto a reel-to-reel and spliced together via blade and tape. When screened, the film and music were originally played on separate gear with manual syncing - pre MC era. The later film and sound were eventually copied onto CD thanks to the heroic work of SFvideo. Grin and bear it; it's very old school, analog, with visible cut-and-tape-splice edits in the film. The story explores disability, isolation, socio-economic class and the coming of age for the filmmaker. True teenage bewilderment.
a LUXBOXfilm ca. 1972-73. A film by D. Deauxdt and F. Herbert.
At some point during the on-site filming in the outdoors, the film-maker was chased by police for trespassing onto private land and contributing to the delinquency of minors. He ran with the camera and other equipment, jumping into the bed of a pick-up in an attempt to gain a ride. No such luck; he was arrested and spent the remaining afternoon with the police. Everyone else had safely escaped. Filmed in New Orleans.
The name Luxbox was derived from a brand of a sheet-metal, cube-shaped, box camera made by Lumière in France, from 1933. As students, we had attempted to replicate the function.....with no luck on that, either.
