Sue Brown is the NERT COORDINATOR for Bayview and leads classes on Disaaster preparedness through Eventbrite and Zoom called MAP Your BLOCK.
Born in New Zealand, Sue's early familiarity with the obvious chaos that comes with being the eldest of nine siblings, along with added tempering as a Girl Scout, taught her to 'BE Prepared' from an early stage. Trained as a teacher, she taught in a rural area before leaving for England. Along the way, she also learned and passed on valuable First Aid, CPR, camping skills, and other life-lessons on helping and stepping up for others.
During her career as a teacher and then Vice principal, Sue was actively involved in safety in schools, developing and understanding the protocols for different events, and brought those passions and experiences when moving to the US in 1996.
When moving from San Jose to San Francisco, in 2013, Sue sought to participate in local disaster preparedness, and completed her first NERT( SFFD Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) training. When Anietie Ekanem, the former NERT coordinator asked her to assist, she again stepped up and soon became the new coordinator for the Bayview.
"One of the things they tell you in NERT training is to take care of family and neighbors first.... however at that time that was pretty vague", says Sue.
"When I saw MAP Your BLOCK the city version of MAP Your Neighborhood, I loved it for its clarity, easy 9 steps, and then with confidence I could show up at our NERT Staging area(MLK Park) knowing I had done as much as I could to ensure the safety of my neighbors when 911 services will be unavailable and inreachable during a major disaster."
During Shelter in Place, Sue Brown has trained over 300 participants from all over the city, but only a few from the Bayview. Although she cannot meet in person due to the COVID19 sheltering orders, Sue is using technology to conduct meeting a meeting neighbors in order to communicate the work of Map Your Blosk (MYB3).
" I just love encouraging others to take a leadership role in our community, and doing something positive for mankind especially during this pandemic! "
Join a MAP your BLOCK training and meet your neighbors. Sue will coordinate the meetings for a safe and secure exchange of information.
What is MAP your BLOCK?

The original station, known as South East Station and later as Potrero Station, was built in 1915 to serve the residents of Potrero Hill and Bayview. In 1987, voters approved a bond measure to build a new station at 201 Williams Avenue. Bayview Station opened in February 1997.
In early 2013, a group of Bayview non‐profits, small businesses, faith‐based organizations, universities residents and city agency stakeholders came together to create a vision for the Bayview that ensures the health and well-being for all residents and local agencies in a future that grows richer in stressors and shocks every day. Out of this process, Resilient Bayview was born and over the course of the last few years, the program members worked intensely to create a Resilience Action Plan that inventories the goals and objectives that will guide the group’s efforts to empower local agencies and residents to prepare for and recover from disasters of any size.

This is the talk of gentrifiers! And that's not a compliment. You are blaming the victims. Has it occurred to you that with a couple of wrong turns and some bad luck, you could be struggling to survive however you could. Would you want to be spoken of with the contempt you are speaking here?

I like the T Line Magazine. Very interesting content. My only suggestion is to organize the information a little better. As it is right now I was not sure where I was navigating to. Bayview resident

Great Job; I Love the T-LINE Bayview community rep.; longtime advocate; Citywide leader
That is a great letter but it is all high minded and vague. It does not address the how, and there is the rub for almost everyone wants to "solve" this problem but there is no consensus on the how to do so. Furthermore, there is no discussion of the underlying problem that will need to be solved for this "homeless" problem to be truly resolved, and that is housing. Bayview resident, business owner and community leader
Can you please take me off your mailing list. I never subscribed to this. San Francisco resident
